Thanks Guys! For getting me to sandan!

March 1st, 2010

robWhen I first began kendo, 4 years ago, we had about 20-30 people in the national federation. There were a handful of dan grades / seniors but mostly everybody was a kyu grade. The highest grades in the country were Peter and Vince’s. They  were both 3rd Dan.

I am really amazed and humbled that I have now achieved this level, I never thought it possible from the day I began, and I have to thank everyone in kendo in Ireland and beyond for this.

Peter and Vince have made my kendo what it is today and over the last 6 -12 months Jason and Vince have worked me into something that can resemble a sandan, and I thank you sincerely for that. They all thought me to graciously (well some times not too graciously ;) ) seek out and accept my weaknesses and confront them and not try to hide them or from them. Some times were easier than others but they were all worthwhile. Read the rest of this entry »

Well Done Cork Budokai

February 28th, 2010

teamWhat a great weekend! Cork hosted a tremendous few days of kendo seminar’s, individual, team and ladies competition and a grading seminar. Well done to the organising committee and especially the coordinators, Eamonn, Mark and Jason for taxi-ing everyone and everything around.

Everyone at Cork Budokai needs to give Dirk Bakker a really HUGE thank you for all the effort he put in to making amazing scoreboards and custom tsuba for sensei. He put in long hard hours to design and build works of art, so much more than was required and we are indebted to him. Arigato gozaimasu. Read the rest of this entry »

Peter’s 1st Anniversary

January 19th, 2010

Peter SherriffAs with last year this time is mixed with success and sadness.

Its been one year since Peter Sherriff, founder of kendo in Ireland and Cork; leader, friend and teacher has passed away.

I was, and still am, greatly affected by his passing. I don’t think I started kendo, as a beginner wanting to learn to fight; I came to UCC kendo club pretty much looking for help (I didn’t see it that way at the time however). I’ll never forget those first few months, when I was physically sick before every single class. I could barely function in a social setting let alone talk to strangers. Peter pulled me out of myself and straightened my posture and mind through the application of the sword. This is real kendo. You are taught kendo, how to cut with a sword, but you learn how to overcome your demons, and how to live, even if it seems hard: espcially when it seems hard. Read the rest of this entry »
